On this page you can see which ranks and roles Studdsville Fire Department currently has and some information about them.
Recruit/Probationary Firefighter
The lowest rank within the department, a recruit applies at SVFD, then needs to take a written and a oral exam to determin if he is mentally suited to become a firefighter, if he/she passes the recruit will undergo a physical test, if passed he/she will then spend 6 months at the Studdsville Fire Academy for basic training plus a NREMT certificate.
After graduating the Fire Academy, the recruits get a station assignment at either our department of one of our M/A departments.
If they are assigned to a Studdsville unit, they will either start at an Engine or a Ladder company, with exception of the ARFF companies.
When the recruit arrives at his assigned station, he will be a Probationary Firefighter from then on.
He/she will spend 3 months on a Engine and 3 months on a Ladder company.
If a Probie doesn't preform as expected he can have up to two 2 month extentions, if he/she is still not preforming as expected they will either go back to the academy or be cut loose.
But if a probie succesfully passes his 6 months, he is promoted to firefighter, and he can either join a paid of a volunteer company.

When a probie is promoted to firefighter, he/she will recieve a set of black bunkers with reflector stripes, and a black helmet he or she will wear for most of their career.
Getting a assignment at Engine or Ladder company, they will train and expand their skills, and after a few years they can apply or be selected for any of the specialties the department has to offer, Rescue, EMS, USAR, ARFF, HAZMAT etc.
After 5 years as a firefighter a member can apply for the Sergeant exam, and if passed they get a promotion and may wear the chevrons on his helmet and uniform sleeves.
A Sergeant will be the assistant of the company officer, and will assist him or her with all kinds of tasks like, safety officer, interior leader or rescue leader, but if a Sgt. is not in the ranks of a company a senior firefighter can also do these tasks.

Engineers/Apparatus Operators
A firefighter with several years of expierence can apply for the apparatus operator course, where he or she will learn driving with apparatus in different circumstances.
He or she will also learn how to operate aerials, pumps and all other aspects of operating a fire truck.
When passed the member can be appointed as driver in his company.
He will drive the apparatus, run the pump and assist the other crews if needed on scene.
Engineers can be recognised by the orange vest and the baseball cap.

Lieutenant/Captain
Sergeants and senior firefighters with 7 years on the department can apply for the officer exam.
When passed they can be assigned to a company as company officer, which comes with a promotion to Lieutenant and gets a Yellow helmet.
A Lieutenant will take command over a piece of apparatus and its crew, and will function as the officer in command on minor calls or untill a more capable officer arrives.
Lieutenants with a few years expirience commanding a company can take the Captains exam and get the promotion with the Red helmet.
Captains have the same tasks as Lieutenants, but at smaller stations they can also function as station commander and take control over multiple companies on larger calls.
When passed they can be assigned to a company as company officer, which comes with a promotion to Lieutenant and gets a Yellow helmet.

expierenced members of all ranks can decide to become instructors.
They take several exams to determine if they are capable of teaching.
The instructors, teach the recruits the basic and advanced skills, and also train more expierenced members in new techniques, and can either do their job at the academy or at a station.
An instructor gets black bunker gear, the same as the recruits, but with gold rank markings on the chest.

Chiefs
The Chiefs are the highest ranks witin the department.
Recognisable by the white helmet and white uniform.
A expierenced and capable Captain can apply for a Chiefs rank but has to be selected by the mayor of Studdsville.
If succesfull the Captain gets the white helmet and starts as a Battalion Chief.
A Battalion Chief takes command over a incident and coordinates with the front line units to plan and execute the most effective tactic to get a incident under control.
The most expierenced Battalion Chief can be assigned to the Special Operations Command, and will assist a Battalion Chief at the scene with deploying the Special Operations Units, like Squads, Rescues, SCUBA, HAZMAT, ARFF, Marine etc.
The Mayor of Studdsville appoints the Department Chief out of people he thinks is most capable to lead the Department, the Chief then selects his Assistant Chief.
The Chief and Assistant Chief only come on scene at large incidents or when a SVFD unit is involved in a accident.
